Every believer in Jesus, as part of their life in Him, needs to spend time with Him. TRAP is a tool, a way to spend intentional time that goes along with a life that includes prayer, community and service.
What is TRAP?
TRAP is an acronym for a journaling and prayer process that is a guide for personal Bible study and reflection. Journaling does mean writing. If you don’t like to write, don’t worry. This is personal and no one else is likely to read it, but writing is an essential part.
T Text. This is Scripture. To begin with, pick a Scripture and read it. There are ways to do this, but pick something manageable for you where you are. Something not too long is usually best. Remember that this is not the same as an intensive Bible study. Do that too. But this is much more simple and does not involve much in the way of study tools. Write down a verse or short section (yes, write it out-not just the reference) in a journal or notebook.
R Reflect. What is this passage/verse saying to you? Begin to write down your thoughts. Allow God to show you what He wants for you to see here. This might take some time, but be intentional. It might not take much time, and to begin with all you might have to say is “I like this verse.” Just write it down.
A Apply. What is God telling you to do with this? Is He telling you to change something in your life? Is He asking you to share with someone else? Maybe you aren’t sure. The point is to think about it. Write down what God is putting on your heart.
P Prayer. Talk with God. What might you want or need to say? Write down your prayer. This may take a while or not. Don’t worry about that as much as spending this time with God.
TRAP resources are available at the church.
There are reading guides and journals for the whole church, to guide you in the text selection process. You can use your own journal, or get one at the church. A benefit of this process is knowing what you will read and that many others in the church are reading the same texts.
Check the church foyer for current verse readings. Current journals are available at the church.
